The Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888, is considered one of the top resorts in the world. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Famous guests have included American presidents George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Franklin D. Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, as well as Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Thomas Edison, Magic Johnson, Charles Lindbergh, Willy Mays, Babe Ruth, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Downey.
Once locally owned, the resort is now valued at $745 million. Current ownership is the Blackstone Group (60%), Strategic Hotels and Resorts (34.5%) and KSL Resorts (5.5%).
As we walked through the plush lobby, full of sophisticates in fine clothes, we felt out of place in our damp casual clothes and hiking boots. When we could not find a coffee shop/bakery with seating available (Sunday brunch was in full swing), we moved on to Orange Avenue and Villa Nuevo Bakery (also busy with the Sunday brunch crowd), where we had the best cinnamon bun we had ever eaten.
