Apologies, Dear Readers

It seems my posts on my back country hike are coming across as if I am complaining. I did not think so. I thought I was telling a story the way I saw and felt it.

But, one reader called me a WUSS this morning. I did the first thing I could think of and tried to defend myself, playing the age card. Nope, still a WUSS, at any age. Then I did the second thing I could think of and removed the comments from my post, so nobody could read them.

DAMN, I just proved him right. I am a WUSS.

Why do we take it so personally when someone has a different opinion of our posts (or accomplishments) than we do? Not sure. I think it may be simple human nature and the fact that we take ourselves way too seriously.

I foolishly provided my thoughts to another blogger’s question about what my Life’s Desire was. I thought my comment was deep and thoughtful, but the blogger, who is a writer and published author, laughed at me and did not take it seriously. She further said “It’s a wise man who thinks twice before saying nothing” . Ouch. This is the same blogger who once commented that one tongue-in-cheek poem I wrote “barks like a dog” (I mean “purple” rhymes with “maple syruple” – of course it Barks like a Dog. It was drivel) and referred to my non-prose posts as “dubious poetry”. She is entitled to her opinion. She is a writer and published author. I am merely retired and telling a story. I took it in stride and still read her posts and comment from time to time. She no longer reads my posts.

I am writing this post as part of my 12 step recovery program, not to solicit any comments from my readers to substantiate or prove that I am anything but a WUSS. I have restored the WUSS comments to my earlier blog post and am also pasting them in this post at the bottom, for all to read.

Hi, my name is Allan and I am a WUSS. I will try to do better in future. Thanks for reading.

ME – Not sure why you are calling us wusses, but that is fine, as it is your opinion. As a 65 year-old, I feel this was a major accomplishment in my life and not having broken bones, etc shows that for an old guy, I have a fair bit of skill in maintaining balance, not to mention stamina in completing the distance and altitude gain without major problems. I have never played rugby and I can only admire those who do for their ability to survive the hits and keep on running. I did fall of a bicycle in Nice once and smashed my face and teeth on the pavement requiring an ambulance ride to a hospital. I was back on the streets that night, walking under my own power and enjoying the sights with my bandaged face, so my balance has improved with age. Cheers.

◇ Diamond Hard – It’s because you are complaining like a “WUSS!!!” my dear SupaSoulBro @kagould17; it’s Crystal Clear Clarity that these days, at 50+ and feeling like a 20 year old, I have No Patience for complaints in the context of “AGE!!!” however “OLD!!!”  – Diamond Hard

  1. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion — it’s your blog so, unless it’s rude or nasty, you don’t need to justify what you wrote/write.
I always note that when I write haiku I have a lot less reads. But that’s ok — I like to write them. And just because someone is published doesn’t give them the right to be rude about your writing.

  2. It seems you are enjoying all opportunities in life and celebrating every accomplishment. If that is what makes you a WUSS then I want to be one as well!!!!! I love reading about your adventures and seeing your incredible pictures. Keep on keeping on!

  3. My mother always said – if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I really don’t understand what people would think the end result would be by insulting you. Maybe to make themselves feel good. Personally I think you are Awesome Allan – to undertake that adventure. And it doesn’t matter what your age is – I’m sure it was just as difficult for the younger men as it was for you. Looking forward to reading the rest of your adventure – in your own words. Hugs

  4. Hi Ann. Real life is not like that especially in the Blog world. As to the commenter, full respect to anyone who plays rugby, at any age. After watching the 7’s tournament in Vancouver, they are a hardy lot. It is something I would not put my body through. Thanks form reading. Allan

  5. I don’t see the point of blogging if our posts will always be about unicorns and lollipops. Sometimes we all have the right to complain, get tired or not enjoy something as it is – why not share with other people as long as we all acknowledge that this is OUR experience and not a common rule. I love traveling and I love complaining half of the time 😀

    1. Hi Minessa. Good thing I did not do a post on the weather. That I would definitely complain about. Thanks for reading and commenting. Humans are a varied lot, are they not. Allan

  6. There is no need AT ALL for you to apologise. I didn’t read any complaining, you were telling it as you experienced it and I have been very much enjoying your posts.

And, I admire you for doing your hike – your doctor must love you. Most 65-year olds (and many younger ones too) would collapse if they hiked in the Rocky Mountains! Many would collapse just walking on a flat sidewalk to the grocery store.

Anyone calling you a wuss has insecurity issues. You’re probably too nice to do this, but I would block them.

    1. Nice is for WUSSes. I am not sure what the ultimate goal was to the comment(s). Perhaps to get a rise out of me and if so, it worked. As to nice, the issue seems to have turned into a Spam a thon, so I treated the comments as such, deleted the follower and changed how comments will be approved. Thanks for your support Lynette. 7. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but at the same time there’s a difference between dialogue and constructive criticism, and vitriol and trolling.. I missed your original story and the comment that was left on it, but I can say that on my own blog if anyone insults me or disrespects me (on my own domain, which I pay for) then I feel I’ve got every right to delete and block them. The internet is big and wide and there are plenty of blogs and content for every taste.. there’s no point in complaining about something if it can’t be done constructively and respectfully.

  8. Hello Dee. Thanks for your support and for reading. I guess the fact I have been blogging for almost 5 years before this happened is somewhat of a miracle. Hope all is well with you. Allan

  9. I feel angry and hurt for you.
I don’t want to come here and go off in your comments section but I have very strong words for those types of people, the mildest being “screw off”. And don’t even get me started on that pretentious author woman.

I LOVE these hiking posts. I don’t think you’re complaining at all and even if you were, so what?! Hiking is hard. Hiking with a pack is even harder. Hiking at 65 must add even more challenges than that! Besides, hiking and writing about it is WAY better than spending your precious time on earth saying shitty things to people.

May these two realize the full nastiness of their actions.

And may you, keep keeping on. I love your posts and I love your poems and I love your thoughtful comments.

    1. Hi Lael. I should have been forewarned by his initial comment. It seemed a bit different. I just did not know what it was. Then the next one where he said we were WUSSes, I was going to let slide, but when my wife asked if I was OK with being called a WUSS, I rose to the bait. That was stupid of me. After this post, the SPAM attack was on and I had to react. Too bad. All comments will now await moderation.
Thanks for your kind comments. I think we all whine at times and my whining was never meant to be anything more than telling a good story. If you do not put emotion into a tale, you only have words.

Thanks for being a faithful reader. I love your posts too. Always good to see a variety of posts and points of view. Stay well.

      1. Exactly. I rather feel the whole point of stories are the emotions anyway.
I think its very normal to take the bait as you say and I even think its healthy to do so. You were kind and said the things that needed to be said. There is nothing wrong with that. I’m tired of ageism. It’s time we start fighting back.
        ❤ to you.

      2. Even the old like to taunt and flaunt. I was on a train near Tokyo with a friend, when an old dude began doing pull ups on the train grab rails and then told my friend in Japanese that he had more vigor than I did. My friend told him to grow up, not just grow old. Too funny. Thanks for being real Lael. Allan

      3. Lets just say, his taunt was not very Japanese. They are too polite for that. I am sure he had other inadequacies he was not prepared to share with me. TeeHee. Thanks for your comments Lael. Allan
