Blooms – August in Edmonton

While Edmonton jokes abound in more moderate climates (read BC), the profusion of blooms during our admittedly short growing season never ceases to amaze me.

Edmonton consistently enters the Communities in Bloom competition and consistently places well in one category or another.

Out for a walk in early August, we were amazed by the variety of colours and textures of the various flowers and plants. Admittedly, a good number of these plants were on the Alberta Legislature grounds, but floral displays abound throughout the city. With all the rain this year, the flowers (and mosquitoes) did very well. Enjoy.

  1. We were in Victoria for a few hours as part of an Alaskan cruise two years ago and I could not recall what our buggy tour driver called the inter-city competition. Thanks for reminding me. I think you captured some wonderful blooms.

    1. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Glad I could help. We are just back from Ireland and they were wrapping up their similar competition. There contests is called “Tidy Towns”. Good to have community pride. Allan

  2. Communities in bloom is a world wide and I think it’s a fabulous way to increase beauty and community pride. My little home town in sask (<200 people) won a few years ago and got to go to China for the awards ceremony!
