European Vacation – September 16/19 – Pisa, Italy (Part 11) – Orto Botanico di Pisa – University Botanical Museum

Looking for something to do after our tour of the Cathedral was over, we walked the short distance to this facility. Admission was 4 Euro each, but the attendant finding that we were all related, gave us the 10 Euro family rate. Such a deal.

Orto Botanico di Pisa is a botanical garden operated by the University of Pisa. It was first established in 1541 by Cosimo I de ‘Medeci. In 1563, it was relocated from its location near the river to one near the convent Santa Marta and in 1591, it was relocated to its present location. From the beginning, it contained a gallery of natural items (now the Museo di Storia Natrale) and portraits of its directors. It also has one of the earliest iron framed hothouses in Italy.

Leaves and blooms

Other than the bug bites, this was a great way to spend an hour. The shade from the day’s heat was also a bonus.

  1. I love how there are statues everywhere! Always something interesting to look at. And that tree table was amazing! I would love to have a table like that. I also had no idea that bamboo would get so big! Nothing like the bamboo I had lol

    1. Good cities have interesting buildings and people. Great cities have historical buildings, people and art. I think the tree table could be priceless, given the number of do not touch signs. Love the bamboo. Hard to believe that it is a grass and that giant Bamboo can grow up to 36″ (910mm) in a 24 hour period. Thanks for reading and commenting Angie. Allan
