European Vacation – September 19/19 – Vernazza (Cinque Terre), Italy
The origin of this settlement dates back to Roman times. It was built inland in the 10th century, further back than its present location is in. It was an important port and in 1276, became part of the Republic of Genoa. Shortly after that, the center of the settlement moved to the coast. In 1816 it became part of the Sardinian Kingdom and in 1861, it became part of the Italian Kingdom. Population as of 2018 is listed as 824 people.

Arriving at the station, it is a very short walk into town
As we followed the crowds down the main street, J discovered a path through an opening in the rocks, leading to a stony beach. It was a hot day and we needed no further encouragement to go dip our feet in the Ligurian Sea. Along the way, there were stacks and stacks of rocks, piled up by previous visitors.
The cool water felt heavenly on the tootsies and as we stood there, we had a chance to enjoy our surroundings.
J & I built a rock stack before leaving this place and J’s hat behind. We wandered back into town to see the sights and perhaps grab a bite.
All the good dining spots with a view and shade seemed to be taken, but, we did grab a cone of fish and chips before heading on, to our next destination.

After working for 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I waited my entire career for……retirement.
I have been exploring this new career for the past 3+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wanted me to do has been rewarding.
While I still miss the social aspect of working with a team of great people, I have managed to keep in touch with many from my former team and I have many friends and family members who now fulfill this part of my life. Now that my Patty has retired, we are able to spend more time in pursuits and with people who are near and dear to us.
I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may not become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

Going from village to village via kayak seems like an interesting way to see the sites.
Agreed and there were a few people out in kayaks. You would want to pick a calm day and wear lots of sun screen. The other option is to hire a private boat to take you out (costly) or take the frequent ferries (overloaded). Thanks for reading Bernie. Allan
What an amazing and sort of unique way to reach the beach – through an opening in the rocks! Vernazza harbour views are absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 😀 Aiva
For sure. If we had blinked or even looked right instead of left, we would have missed this opening and the cooling water. Yes, this was a pretty village and harbour. Thanks for reading and commenting Aiva. Allan
I agree, Lynette. There is a lot to love about the country, especially the Tuscan and Ligurian areas. You are welcome and thanks very much for reading. Allan
The number of piles here was just crazy. Guess everyone just wants to leave their mark and this is way better than Graffiti. Thanks for reading and commenting. Allan

I’m always amazed when I come across stacks of rock piles and have always wondered how these get started and continue to grow. It’s kind of neat.
