European Vacation – September 27/19 – Part 16 – Accidental Procession

As we were wandering around Old Nice in the evening, we could not help but notice that groups of people in robes of black or white were gathering in front of the Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur de Nice. There were both men and women and they seemed to be getting ready for some big event.

We eventually learned that this was an annual gathering of the Protectors of Jerusalem and that they would shortly be proceeding through the narrow streets of Old Nice and into Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate de Nice on Place Rossetti.

It took them a while to get organized and ready to go, but, soon, to the pealing of numerous church bells, the procession began. As the last member and the supervising Police members passed us, we all joined in the walk.

In this setting, at this time of night, it was magical. We had only witnessed it, because we had decided to go stroll Old Nice in the dark.

Gathering the group
The procession begins
Age and ability did not deter the marchers
Proceeding to the peals of church bells
The procession seemed to go on forever
At last, the audience joins in
Entering the cathedral
Entering the cathedral
