European Vacation – October 6/19 – Collon, Ireland – Part 2 – New Mellifont Abbey
The first Cistercians came to Ireland in 1142 and built Old Mellifont Abbey. In 1152, the abbey hosted the Synod of Kells-Mellifont. After dissolution in 1539, the abbey became a private manor house. The treaty of Mellifont was signed here in 1603 and the abbey served as William of Orange’s headquarters in the 1690 Battle of the Boyne. Today, Old Mellifont Abbey lies in ruins.

New Mellifont Abbey was created in 1938, when Cardinal McRory invited the monks of Mount Melleray Abbey in Co. Waterford to found a new monastery at Oriel Temple, Collon on lands that had been part of Mellifont Abbey for hundreds of years. The present community, while reduced in numbers continues to live a life based on Cistercian values. They run a farm and garden in the area.

While we visited Old Mellifont in 2008, we did not return on this trip. We did take a Sunday morning stroll through New Mellifont and enjoyed the pastoral quiet of the grounds. There used to be a printing press on the property, but it is now closed. Cousin J worked his whole career in this printing office.

After working for 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I waited my entire career for……retirement.
I have been exploring this new career for the past 3+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wanted me to do has been rewarding.
While I still miss the social aspect of working with a team of great people, I have managed to keep in touch with many from my former team and I have many friends and family members who now fulfill this part of my life. Now that my Patty has retired, we are able to spend more time in pursuits and with people who are near and dear to us.
I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may not become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

You are welcome Susie. That would be a good walking path for this day. Sigh. Guess we will walk our town instead. Thanks for reading and hope your arm is making good progress. Cheers. Allan
A lucky sunny day, for sure and what better place to walk on a Sunday that on a Cistercian abbey property. Spring has sprung here today, Lynette. How about where you are? Thanks for reading Lynette. Allan
We have been melting for about a week now but that’s going to take a while because of all the snow. 🙂 The sun feels warm and spring-like, too. Looking forward to it. Glad to hear you’re warming up.

Thank you and thanks for reading. I think they say Ireland is 40 shades of green. We found more than that. Allan

You had sun. 🙂 Ireland is so green – there’s a reason why it’s called the Emerald Isle. 🙂
