The Current Normal – Backyard Blossom Beauty

I had it in mind to wander through our small city taking photos of trees in bloom. Yes, you read it right, over two months since we were seeing the blossoms on the trees in Vancouver, our trees are now flowering here. However, my plan kind of fell through, which is OK, because my yard has the best bloomin’ trees anyway.

For the last 3 years, we have been away while our faithful Schubert Chokecherry bloomed its heart out. Not this year. Covid has kept us pretty much anchored to our house and this year our 28 year old Schubert put on quite the display.

The scent of the blossoms has been heavenly, when we are able to sit on our back deck. This year, we noticed a real absence of bees…..not a good sign. They are usually buzzing around the flowers. Instead, we have had a succession of blue jays flying in and out of the tree.

adorn thy lacy branches.

Nothing like a brilliant blue sky
light and shadow play
my lawn is still a bit patchy
so nice when it is all weeded
this tree starts off with blossoms and bright green leaves and ends up with berries and purple leaves – our favourite shade tree

Here is the view we get from our South facing windows on main and 2nd floor.

    1. Thanks William. That all seems so long ago now. All is well here now. Cases showing slight increase since opening, but we are sticking pretty close to home. Have a great Sunday. Allan

  1. Wow, I love your yard, Allan, it’s so well kept. I’ve never seen such pretty little flowers, are they fragrant? Thanks for sharing and have a good day. It’s been raining for two days straight, and we are entering a phase 3 on Monday when all of the shops, pubs and restaurants are going to open. I, for one, have no desire whatsoever to rush out the door yet. 😊 Take care 😊 Aiva

    1. Thanks. Easy to take care of the yard, when you are in a stay at home condition. The Midnight Schubert Chokecherry flowers have a delightful fragrance that wafts across our back deck. Flowers are long gone and the leaves have turned to mostly purple. Showers here for the whole week coming. Just came back from a walk in the rain, a big help in physical distancing. Our stage 3 is supposed to happen in a week or two. We are still not hugging the kids, as you could see from my Fathers’ Day post. Stay well and have a great week Aiva. Allan
