February 19/19 – Winterlude Part 15 – Canmore – the Night Time is the Right Time
Despite the fact we were in a fully equipped apartment, we did have a few favourite local restaurants that we wanted to eat at. In order to get exercise and not have to choose a designated driver, we always try to walk to them.
On this night, we opted to go to one of our favourite Mexican restaurants, Cafe Aroma. In the winter months, they only open for dinner and for weekend brunch. To be fair, we were all dragging our butts on the way downtown this day. Not sure if the hiking and the altitude took a toll on us or if we were just tired.
We arrived shortly after their 5 PM opening time and were soon seated in colourful surroundings, eagerly awaiting our appies and bevvies. We saw a coat rack of sombreros and serapes and wondered what that was for. We did not have long to wait to find out.
The “apperitivo for sharing” included hot bean and feta, guacamole and pico de gallo dips with in house made tortilla chips (too few, but house made, nonetheless). Cervezas and Margaritas completed our opening salvo, while we waited for the mains.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and L & L opted to treat us to the meal, as a thank you. Muchos Gracias to you guys, too.
Refreshed, we shrugged our coats back on and headed out for the walk home. The streets were now dark and we took time to appreciate the festive lighting on the streets and buildings, as we walked. Strangely, we did not feel nearly as tired as on our inbound walk.
On arriving home at the Lodge, we all collapsed either into bed or into comfy chairs. It had been a great day.
Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement.
I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure.
I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

I have not, but my friend told me it was good. The brew pub TANK 310 rates better and I have eaten there. Great pizzas and good craft beer, brewed on the premises. I do like the Mexican restaurant Aroma, but it has slipped lately. Fingers crossed that all this COVID stuff is done by then, so you can enjoy your reunion. Stay well Bernie. Allan
